DEMOCRACY! OH MY!

What: The second film in DSO’s fall series, Weijun Chen’s documentary Please Vote for Me* showcases the impact of a primary school’s class president elections on a community in Wuhan, China. The movie also raises several important questions: Is democracy a universal value that suits human nature? Do elections inevitably lead to manipulation?

When & Where: Thursday, November 13^th@ 5:00 p.m.

Why: On November 4, 2008, the United States elected its first African American president. Now is the perfect time to discuss the current state and projected future of democracy in America. What is the political and social significance of Obama’s election? How will the party change affect domestic issues and international relations? What can we, as citizens, do to promote democracy, regardless of our political affiliation?

The Fall Film Series & Dia de los Muertos Celebration

What: Join the DSO as we kick-off our Fall film series with a Dia de los Muertos celebration. PhD student Elisabeth Rodriguez will give an opening talk about the holiday’s history and cultural significance followed by a screening of Steev Hise’s documentary film on femicide in Ciudad Juarez, On the Edge.

This is the new blog for the Diversity Student Organization at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences. The group's mission is to:

encourage the recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented groups within the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Pittsburgh.
provide a network for current and incoming students that will address diversity concerns within SIS.
promote awareness of diversity concerns, recruitment, financial assistance, and orientation to the campus environment within SIS Administration.
provide forums for students to share experiences, socialize, and to plan outreach activities.

Our blog will be an extension of these activities, also providing students with a medium to voice their opinions and concerns.
